lobster mainstay and german purveyor of the deep raw, trp aka david willenberger, returns to lobster theremin for a full-on outing of crunchy, melodic, acid-tinged house, techno & electro. with recent ep’s for mörk and shall not fade, the young producer comes full circle with a cement-mixed, drum-heavy sound that melds an even weightier production aesthetic to a spectral of tonal distortion usages.

when the one o ones originally released radio cosmo disco back in 1977 it was confined to 7inch, which is no place for such majestic cosmic groove exploration. now best records are continuing their quest to repress every hidden gem of italian dance music and beyond, and they re doing radio cosmo 101 the right way. the full disco version of the track gets to stretch out on a full 12inch side, and does so in a dreamy haze of feel good funk. you can still hear the radio edit on the flip, and the original instrumental jam is included for those who want to drift away on those sumptuous tones of the backing track.

russell haswell returns to diagonal with a new five-track mini-album called respondent. not quite an ep nor long enough for a full album, this record marks a significant shift in direction for haswell, who collaborates with a vocalist, sue tompkins, for the first time in a career defined by its unorthodoxy that now stretches some 27 years.

xen & yovav return to malka tuti in 2018 with full thrust and eyes to the future. after being responsible for the first 2 releases on the label, this time the enigmatic singer and the influential producer collaborate and deliver 2 original songs. hayom etmol is a 100% good vibe diy post-punkish poppy song with a flowing synthetic bass line, balearic guitar riffs and dreamy vocals. the b-side, shavit, is a vocal led song, with a repetitive guitar bassline and, trip guitar riffs and a minimalistic drum machine. low fi in its production shavit feels as if it has been dug out of an abandoned 80s record store in the outskirts of glasgow or amsterdam, with a strong cold wave feel to it. this 7” will be the first in a series of more diy approach to electronic music, song writing and production. some exciting names on the bill so hold on to your chairs... hayom etmol’s artwork design was made as always by morey talmor, with a printed inner sleeve designed by the israeli artist kobi swissa and a special silkscreened outer pvc sleeve.

the new record offers up a pair of killer synthpop gems which, in the words of the bands’ mark vorderhaus “drift into the arena of the unwell with their latest outing “in the hospital garden”, and pose the curious questions: is it so unfortunate to surrender your mind to a permanent altered state? can losing oneself irreversibly to a manipulated insanity, actually prove to become a rare and wonderful freedom? attraction battles control as the transformation completes itself. the b-side, “transformation” depicts the liberated insanity without challenge, now thriving and pulsating beyond the point of any return.”

polytechnic youth enter the fray once again, continuing an already productive year (these new 45s are 4/5/6th releases in 2018 already!) with a trio of quite brilliant yet totally different 45s.
alpár aka hungarian bálint zalkai, is the co-founder of farbwechsel, the budapest based record label, and his own recordings of electronic compositions (often built upon random looping sequencers in a minimalist style) are key to the label’s release output thus far. his goal as he sees it is to “catch a random pattern, loop it and build up a piece with that randomly pulsing theme. just let to flow the voltages and sound waves and try not to disturb them or change their basic behaviours”.
the two tracks here were recorded with this approach very much in mind. the atmosphere of “mejiro” is “not unlike a bird observation. attempting to find the right spot, getting closer and closer to the bird, which almost controls you and your movements as you attempt to near it”. whereas “wakayama” is a more direct piece, and maybe the most melodic song alpár ever recorded. while “mejiro” is a woozy, cautious piece, “wakayama is like a tropical fruit or the ume, (the japanese apricot), colourful and full of flavour yet -with thanks to- the slowly humming theme in the background, an element of sourness grips you at the back of your tongue as it ends!

the second of march’s trio of killer polytechnic youth 45s is a mighty extended piece of slow building berlin school-esque electronica extended over 2 sides of a 33rpm disk, recorded by adam leonard, initially from a batch of 18 tracks recorded at varying times over the last six years.
“entkommen” is his first release for the label here, and both artist and label rather liked the idea of one extended track across two sides of a 45, whereby the listener must flip the disc at a half way point to continue the piece. it struck us as increasingly unusual and works a treat here...
adam has amassed a number of acclaimed releases in varying styles, and across a number of esteemed labels over the years. last year’s full band release “invaderband” being shortlisted for a northern ireland music prize 2017 and was 6music recommended. not to mention previous releases in collaboration with the owl service and p.g six.
his electronic home recordings are all well worth investigating and polytechnic youth proudly releases the first fruits of those sessions right here. a numbered, limited edition vinyl only 7” hand numbered to 250 copies.

about this release *first 10 tracks only come with the limited edition nijmegen s eshu welcomes co-founder ivano tetelepta for his first solo release on the label. it is also the imprint s first full length, but tetelepta s second album after the hypnotic drum workout that was true colours, his debut on fear of flying in 2012. it comes as a double vinyl release with the first disc being limited, and finds the producer casting himself free from the dance floor and serving up a beautifully atmospheric soundtrack that would be a perfect companion for a nature documentary. when making eps and 12-s, tetelepta s smooth and infectious drums are always front and centre in his work, whether solo or as producing with label mates under the eshu alias.

macaulay is ricardo medina, a mexico city based dj producer deeply ingrained in the mexican underground techno scene (xxxtra picante, disque discos). he presents an ep full of acid drenched techno joined by tad bit of cheekiness he is known for, with rolling basslines and jacking drums making these cuts perfect for peak time weirdness. on remix duty is fellow mexico city based alejandro paz (comeme, rbma) who ups the wonkiness on techmoreno with a percussion filled heater

out of nowhere, here comes villee with his debut ep chock full of dancefloor gems. from the very first listen we knew we had something special that we needed to release on pressed for time. its a difficult thing to reference classic tracks and artists without sounding like a carbon copy however villee manages this with aplomb. referencing larry heard (check the chords on the inventor), cajual records, french house and the diy free party sound - we think this ep is fantastic! think warm, analogue, looped up, mpc house with swing and you re on the right track

strange valleys, the 2018 full-length from starving daughters, is a progression as well as a shift in sound from the la band s already-stellar previous releases. make no doubt about it that the sound of progressive rock and psychedelia still play a big role here but there s certainly a greater influence from library music on the new lp. the starving daughters vinyl impressions blog, led by chris tillotson of the band, shared the music of chris s collection of which many were library lp s. these records seemed to have seeped into the mind, body, and souls of the whole band on this strange valleys lp. everything from the instrumentation, the attention to melody, to the track-length shows the large appreciation they have for library music. that being said, this moog-heavy, psychedelic-prog-funk, california-themed record is certainly unique and adventurous. winding through the exotic roads of strange valleys is certainly a trip well worth taking over and over again.

with their new horizon ep, lucien & the kimono orchestra open a music box which transports you in a blue and dawnish atmosphere, a morning spent on walking in an old cinematic paris. first step in the eighties, connection starts as a film opening. then arrives the single, fresh start, full of indelible voices and gimmicks. horizon, sung in french, is a delicate reference to the french songwriting tradition inherited from michel berger, alain chamfort or alain souchon. to get some breath back between two songs, georges, offers a strong instrumental interlude. almost at the end, the english-spoken shell extends the panel of influences with its downtempo emotion. with its spontaneous declamations and slick guitar riff, asile closes the journey, as the splendid climax of the foursomes second ep.

fresh, full on & saturated ‘in-ya-face’ techno trip

meaning -universe- or -the cosmos- in greek, sympan is the second full ep from lazaros, cologne-based artist and long-time friend of the label.

the fourth installment in john osborns dred records series will be from fellow uk producer harsh puri who goes under the moniker reformed society. dred 004 consists of six tracks in total three that will appear on the vinyl release, followed by another three that will be digital-only exclusives. harsh puri aka reformed society debuted in 2015 with this being his sixth consecutive release in order. harshs productions caught johns eye, or rather ear, after being sent to him last year and resulted in this release of six solid prime time deep house stompers. packaged in an understated matte white sleeve with a black and white picture of brahma (the four headed hindu god of creation) handstamped on each cover by the label owner himself, this being a continuation of the human skull dred logo. one life opens the dimensions ep and is the track given to label boss john osborn for deconstructing and remoulding into his own specific vision each release will contain a rework from osborn. if you are familiar with johns previous work you will immediately recognize his characteristic resonating percussion, the tune being a deep house sci-fi storm expedition driven by a full luscious kick covering the tracks of chords from unsettled pads. the eps title track has ambient sonic rays flowing through it, being aptly named dimensions it is also the records warmest adventure, distorted percussion juggles sparse subaqueous melodic moments, and from here we go into the 12inches final moment, chasing titanoid. reformed society goes in with full yet silent force on this one. a warped bassline co-creates the groove with a particularly bouncy beat with sharp strings piercing though.

5 1 1 5 9 3 is the first full-length album release of vienna based artist electric indigo, who started djing in the late 1980s, worked at the legendary hard wax record store in the early 1990s, and effortlessly manages to entertain the dancing crowd at berghain as much as the contemporary music avant-garde at wien modern. 5 1 1 5 9 3 combines influences of both worlds into a consistent and coherent album. crystalline metallic objects collide, embedded into fractured endless spaces, sparse rhythmical syncopations shaping grids, holding sonic particles in place. rare vocal transformations inject a human touch. 5 1 1 5 9 3 offers a unique universe, full of color and light, partially flirting with current club music and at other times diving deep into sublime sonic areas.

arkansas native, lee moore moved to memphis in 1975 with only one goal in mind: to make it big in the music industry and to release music that would be played in new york, l.a and everywhere in between. as a singer and songwriter lee moore spent the 1980s collaborating in memphis with the best of the best session musicians and vocalists from labels like volt and stax records to record and release futuristic boogie, soul, and funk. lee moore unfortunately never got close to reach his goals of fame and fortune. past due records have saved the day yet again by reissuing for the first time the west coast inspired funk full length le gamby - double oo too sweet from 1985, truly a rarity and another glimpse of the unheralded genius of lee moore. yet again, this rare lp is virtually a ghost, known only to the hardcore record collectors and boogie funk aficionados. now is the time!

5 years since midnight shift’s first release in 2012, the label assembles a collective of artists, most of them are in advance of their full eps releasing later. representing the sounds of the label is this manual of secret moves, up in the sleeves. the mystic motley crew also comprises the alternate sides of familiar faces — amato (the hacker), terry lamborgini (marco bernardi), innyster (seixlack), hodge in a new formation with gramrcy, and an electro moniker from an undisclosed artist: thermocline. from abstract acrobatics to the abrasive and the ultimate gob smack to the floor — the midnight manual.

funky sobrietas is the slick love child by leuk en ko s jan duivenvoorden and richard van den bogaert. intended to be a poppy german italo duo for a wedding act amidst the squatting scene of the hague, the music they produced was of more value than just an one-off. from a shoebox stacked with dodgy recordings two tracks were selected that offer you the full funky sobrietas spectrum. maria is the anthem for the one you would die for, with unpretentious vocals and echoes but catchy synths nonetheless. sunny is six glasses of champagne later when the wedding is on it s flipside, with a nifty dry bassline and quirky synths. comes in opaque white vinyl and (again) beautiful riso printed artwork, pressed in limited amount (123) for all the die-hards out there.
